Do you know how to select a cockatiel?
Sure we all get attracted by pretty colors and cuteness but health and behavior considerations should be taken into consideration. For example did you know that the behavior or "mental" condition of a cockatiel is key for selecting a bird? A cockatiel that bites, is frightened easily, or is non responsive, would be much harder to train or adjust to a new environment and for that matter new owners. If you are a first time buyer of a cockatiel, a good rule of thumb is to get a cockatiel that has been hand-raised.
Many pet stores will tell you that a cockatiel that has been hand-raised, just to sell you a bird. A good test is to see if a cockatiel will come and perch on your finger without forcing the bird to do so, this is a sign that the bird is accustomed to human handling. Most cockatiel owners will tell you that a bird that has been hand raised and it's accustomed to human handling will come to your finger because they love to be pet, ride in peoples shoulders, etc. This is so addicting to cockatiels that have been hand-raised, and cared by humans, that cockatiels are well known for becoming spoiled rotten kids for demanding too much attention from their owners. So if you are new potential cockatiel owner, do not be discourage if you do not find your pet cockatiel right away, do go to as many pet stores or breeders as you can, and choose a cockatiel that is not only healthy but a cockatiel that is truly hand raised. Remember, a cockatiel can live up to 22 years, make sure it's a friend for life.
